Chinese New Year Market 2025

We kicked off the year with a vibrant celebration at our Chinese New Year Market held last Sunday, January 26, 2025. The market, a testament to cultural heritage and community spirit, was a resounding success, drawing attendees from across South Surrey and beyond.

Wishing Tree Installation

One of the event's highlights was the creation of a wishing tree, ingeniously constructed from boxes. Participants expressed their hopes for the new year by hanging calligraphy blessings on the tree. The City of Surrey has graciously allowed this tree to be displayed at the Turnbull Gallery for a week, making it a focal point of local celebration and reflection.

Cultural Exhibits and Activities

The market featured an array of traditional cultural activities that captivated both young and old. Attendees enjoyed live demonstrations by renowned calligraphers, who elegantly brushed lucky characters and phrases. The art of lacquer painting and the strategic game of Go provided hands-on experiences for those interested in learning more about these ancient practices. The atmosphere was further enhanced by fun balloons and an assortment of traditional snacks, which offered a taste of cultural richness.

Supporting Local Entrepreneurs and Causes

In line with our commitment to supporting the community, the market also served as a platform for local small business owners, particularly in the sale of fresh and dried flowers. This not only provided local entrepreneurs with a venue to showcase their products but also engaged them directly with the community they serve.

Most importantly, the event supported a heartfelt local cause. Sales from Krisimy Donuts were directed towards fundraising for Donald Aitken and his wife, members of our community facing significant challenges. In a display of solidarity and support, our students spent the afternoon visiting significant locations such as White Rock Marine Drive, Uptown, and Grandview Corners, distributing Spring Festival couplets and well-wishes.

The day concluded with a meaningful gesture as the students visited the Grandview Inn to provide the Aitkens with the funds raised, covering two nights' accommodation and other essential expenses like laundry.

A Community Lifted in Spirits

These efforts not only supported the Aitkens during a difficult time but also uplifted the spirits of everyone involved. The enthusiasm and willingness of our young volunteers to make a difference are a beacon of hope and inspiration.

We are proud of the impact our Chinese New Year Market has had on the community and are grateful for the support that made this event possible. For those who missed it, you can catch a glimpse of the festivities on our FES Instagram account.

Thank you for being a part of our community's strength and joy. Let’s continue to support each other and build a hopeful and vibrant future.
