Burnaby’s public schools are in crisis
Burnaby’s public schools are in crisis. In the 2025–26 school year, the Burnaby School District (SD41) is facing a $3.37 million deficit with just $29,760 left in reserves. To close the gap, the district is cutting $4.2 million in programs and staff — affecting 36.86 full-time positions.
Among the cuts:
MACC (gifted program)
Beta Mini School
Grade 7 band and music programs
Library staff, counsellors, educational assistants, custodians
Burnaby is now following the same painful path Surrey did years ago — and other cities like Maple Ridge, Richmond, and Vancouver are not far behind.

SAVE Burnaby Students & Schools from Budget Cut
A petition was created on Change.org to stop the devastating budget cuts to Burnaby schools. It calls on the BC government to fully fund public education and protect essential programs like MACC, Beta Mini, and music education.
Stop SD41 Burnaby School District from increasing school hours from 6 hours to 8 hours
Another petition was launched on Change.org to oppose Burnaby School District’s reported plan to increase the school day from 6 to 8 hours — a move that could place unnecessary pressure on students and staff without addressing the root issue of underfunding.
Protect Funding for Gifted Learners, including Burnaby’s MACC and Beta Mini programs
A petition has been created on Change.org to protect funding for gifted education, specifically Burnaby’s MACC and Beta Mini School programs. These long-standing enrichment opportunities support high-potential learners — but are now on the chopping block due to budget cuts.
